2,6-Dimethylaniline (2,6-xylidine, 2-amino-m-xylene, CAS 87-62-7) is a high-purity aromatic amine and a vital pharmaceutical and agrochemical intermediate. Its symmetrically substituted, sterically hindered aniline ring makes it the key building block for the local anaesthetics lidocaine, bupivacaine, and mepivacaine and the anti-arrhythmic ranolazine, and for phenylamide fungicides such as metalaxyl and furalaxyl; it is also a precursor for dyes, pigments, and fine chemicals.
