1,4-Dihydroxyanthraquinone

1,4-Dihydroxyanthraquinone (quinizarin; Solvent Orange 86; C.I. 58050; CAS 81-64-1; EC 201-368-7) is an orange to red-brown anthraquinone derivative (C₁₄H₈O₄, molecular weight 240.21 g/mol, melting point 198–199 °C) and one of the most important intermediates in dye chemistry, supplied by Royalchem Spain at ≥99% purity. It is a building block for a wide range of disperse, vat, acid and solvent dyes — including disperse blues and anthraquinone blues — and is also used to colour and mark gasoline and heating oils, to form lake pigments with calcium or barium, and to colour plastics and resins.
Product Description

1,4-Dihydroxyanthraquinone (Quinizarin)

High-Purity Anthraquinone Dye Intermediate (C.I. 58050) — Disperse, Vat & Acid Dyes, Solvent Dyes & Fuel Marking
CAS: 81-64-1         EC: 201-368-7         Assay: ≥ 99%

1,4-Dihydroxyanthraquinone (quinizarin, Solvent Orange 86, C.I. 58050, CAS 81-64-1) is an orange to red-brown anthraquinone derivative and one of the most important intermediates in dye chemistry. It is a building block for a wide range of disperse, vat, acid, and solvent dyes — including disperse blues and anthraquinone blues — and is also used to colour and mark gasoline and heating oils, to form lake pigments, and to colour plastics and resins. Royalchem Spain supplies it at ≥ 99% purity as a crystalline powder, delivered from our Valladolid distribution hub by bag or drum with COA and SDS for every batch.

Technical Specifications (COA Data)
Assay (HPLC) ≥ 99%
Appearance Orange to red-brown crystalline powder
Moisture ≤ 0.5%
Ash ≤ 0.2%
Toluene-Insoluble Matter ≤ 0.2%
Molecular Weight 240.21 g/mol
Melting Point ≈ 198–199 °C
*Regulatory: EINECS-listed (EC 201-368-7); supplied in line with EU REACH requirements; manufactured under ISO 9001. A low-hazard anthraquinone dye intermediate with no harmonised CLP classification; some suppliers self-classify as a mild skin/eye irritant — avoid dust inhalation and use gloves and eye protection. Not classified as a dangerous good for transport. As a dye it readily stains skin, surfaces, and clothing. Always refer to the current SDS.
Chemical Structure
1,4-Dihydroxyanthraquinone quinizarin CAS 81-64-1 chemical structure C14H8O4
Key Properties
• Molecular Formula: C₁₄H₈O₄
• Molecular Weight: 240.21
• Melting Point: ≈ 198–199 °C
• Colour Index: C.I. 58050

Main Applications

Anthraquinone Dye Intermediate

A core building block for disperse, vat, acid, and reactive dyes — including disperse blues, anthraquinone blues, and alizarin- and indanthrene-derived colourants — used across textile, leather, and printing applications.

Solvent Dyes, Fuel Marking & Pigments

As Solvent Orange 86, used to colour and mark gasoline and heating oils, and to make solvent-soluble dyes, lake pigments (with calcium or barium), and colourants for plastics and resins.

Specialty & Analytical Reagent

A chelating hydroxyanthraquinone used as an analytical reagent (including spot tests for boron and certain metals) and a precursor to sulfonated derivatives such as 1,4-dihydroxyanthraquinone-2-sulfonic acid and other functional molecules.

Logistics & Packaging

Standard Packaging:

25 kg fiber drums, cartons, or kraft-paper bags — or to customer requirement. Distributed by Royalchem Spain from our Valladolid hub. Shelf life 24 months in original sealed packaging.

Storage Conditions:

Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, protected from direct light, heat, and strong oxidising agents; keep containers tightly closed and minimise dust generation. The dye stains readily — protect surfaces, skin, and clothing during handling.
