Tetrahydrofurfuryl Acrylate / THFA

Tetrahydrofurfuryl acrylate (THFA; CAS 2399-48-6; EC 219-268-7) is a low-viscosity, mono-functional UV/EB-curable acrylate monomer (C₈H₁₂O₃, molecular weight 156.18) built on a cyclic-ether tetrahydrofuran ring, supplied by Royalchem Spain at ≥99% purity. It combines low viscosity and low volatility with excellent adhesion to difficult substrates — polycarbonate (PC), PET, ABS and metals — strong solvency and fast cure, making it a popular reactive diluent in UV/EB inks, coatings, varnishes, adhesives and 3D-printing resins.
Product Description

Tetrahydrofurfuryl Acrylate (THFA)

Low-Viscosity Mono-Functional UV/EB Reactive Diluent — High Adhesion to PC, PET, ABS & Metal for Coatings, Inks, Adhesives & 3D-Printing Resins
CAS: 2399-48-6         EC: 219-268-7         Assay: ≥ 99%

Tetrahydrofurfuryl acrylate (THFA, CAS 2399-48-6) is a low-viscosity, mono-functional UV/EB-curable acrylate monomer built on a cyclic-ether (tetrahydrofuran) ring. It combines low viscosity and low volatility with excellent adhesion to difficult substrates — polycarbonate (PC), PET, ABS, and metals — together with strong solvency and fast cure, making it a popular reactive diluent in UV/EB inks, coatings, varnishes, adhesives, and 3D-printing resins. Royalchem Spain supplies high-purity THFA (≥ 99%) with a controlled MEHQ inhibitor level for stable storage and transport, delivered from our Valladolid distribution hub by drum or IBC with COA and SDS for every batch.

Technical Specifications (COA Data)

Appearance (25 °C) Transparent, colourless liquid
Acid Value ≤ 0.05% (typ. 0.01%)
Sulfate ≤ 0.02% (typ. 0.002%)
Colour (Pt–Co) ≤ 50 (typ. 20)
Inhibitor (MEHQ) 150 ± 20 ppm
Molecular Weight 156.18 g/mol
*Regulatory: EINECS-listed (EC 219-268-7); supplied in line with EU REACH requirements; manufactured under ISO 9001. GHS — Warning: causes skin and serious eye irritation (H315, H319); as an acrylate ester it may cause an allergic skin reaction (H317) in sensitive individuals and may be harmful to aquatic life — avoid skin contact and release to waterways. Stabilised with ~150 ppm MEHQ to inhibit polymerisation; protect from heat, light, peroxides, and other free-radical sources. High flash point (> 110 °C) — not classified as a flammable dangerous good for transport. Always refer to the current SDS.
Chemical Structure
Tetrahydrofurfuryl acrylate THFA CAS 2399-48-6 chemical structure C8H12O3
Key Properties
• Molecular Formula: C₈H₁₂O₃
• Molecular Weight: 156.18
• Functionality: Mono-functional acrylate
• Viscosity (25 °C): low, ≈ 5–7 mPa·s

Main Applications

UV/EB Coatings & Inks

A low-viscosity reactive diluent and adhesion promoter for UV/EB coatings, varnishes, overprint varnishes, and inks on plastics (PC, PET, ABS) and metal — cutting viscosity while improving substrate wetting and adhesion.

UV Adhesives, Sealants & 3D-Printing Resins

A fast-curing reactive diluent for UV adhesives and sealants where strong adhesion is required, and for stereolithography (SLA/DLP) 3D-printing resins needing low viscosity and good mechanical build.

Specialty & Functional Coatings

Used in fibre and textile surface treatment and transfer-printing auxiliaries, nanocomposite binders (for example Ag/polymer systems), and other functional UV-curable formulations.

Logistics & Packaging

Standard Packaging:

200 kg HDPE or steel drums, or IBC totes (approx. 1000 kg) — or to customer requirement. Distributed by Royalchem Spain from our Valladolid hub. Shelf life typically 6 months in original sealed packaging when stored cool and dark.

Storage Conditions:

Store below 30 °C in a cool, dark, well-ventilated area, away from heat, sunlight, peroxides, and free-radical initiators. Keep containers sealed but do not blanket with inert gas — the MEHQ inhibitor needs dissolved oxygen (air headspace) to prevent premature polymerisation.
