Cyanamide (hydrogen cyanamide, carbamonitrile, CAS 420-04-2) is a versatile, reactive nitrogen building block used across agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and fine chemicals. *Regulatory: EINECS-listed (EC 206-992-3); supplied in line with EU REACH requirements; manufactured under ISO 9001. GHS — Danger: toxic if swallowed or in contact with skin (H301, H311); causes severe skin burns and eye damage (H314); may cause an allergic skin reaction (H317); suspected of causing cancer (H351) and of damaging fertility or the unborn child (H361); may cause organ damage through prolonged exposure (H373); harmful to aquatic life (H412). Causes a disulfiram-like intolerance reaction with alcohol. Thermally unstable — it polymerises exothermically to dicyandiamide above ~40 °C, so it must be kept cold and stabilised. Shipped as a Class 6.1 toxic substance (UN 2811) — confirm packing group and product form against the current SDS. Handle only with full PPE and effective ventilation. Always refer to the current SDS.

Main Applications

Agriculture (50% Solution)

A leading plant-growth regulator and dormancy-breaking agent that stimulates uniform, advanced bud break in table grapes, kiwifruit, cherries, and other deciduous fruit crops.

Pharmaceutical Intermediate (Crystal)

A building block for active pharmaceutical ingredients — for example the H2-antagonist cimetidine — and for veterinary medicines, where high-purity crystals help avoid side reactions in API synthesis.

Fine & Specialty Chemicals

A precursor for dicyandiamide, guanidine and creatine synthesis, flame retardants, and a range of other nitrogen-containing fine chemicals.

Critical Storage:

A thermo-labile product — maintain strictly below 10 °C, away from heat, acids, bases, and oxidising agents. Elevated temperatures trigger exothermic polymerisation to dicyandiamide, which can become hazardous; keep stabilised and do not allow containers to warm.
